At Chasing Cow we were commissioned to make two short Super-8 videos documenting Wessex Community Assets’ (WCA) third year of working with West Dorset farmers experimenting in growing, harvesting and processing hemp and flax. The field trials explore the many benefits these bast fibre crops can offer to sustainable land practices, as well as opportunities for the future development of a bio-based local economy.
The first video provides a snapshot of two harvesting days run by WCA where members of the local community were invited to help hand-harvest some of the flax grown at Tamarisk Farm, while the second documents a flax processing workshop run by WCA at Coppet Hill Farm with a demonstration by Fantasy Fibre Mill of their new open-source drafting and spinning equipment.
